It is my intent to post as complete a record of the work that was done by Cody that we can put together. Sadly circumstances were not so that would have enabled me to learn as much of this information as I could glean from Cody's Memorial Service, when much of his work was gathered together. With your help perhaps we can complete this catalogue.

To my knowledge, Cody never accepted remuneration for any of his paintings.  He had a definite recipient in mind for each and every subject that he painted. His compensation was knowing that the recipient enjoyed having the painting in his or her possession. Sometimes the title of the painting reflects the name of the intended recipient. Cody had a theme for each painting, and it was personally related to the intended recipient in some way... Ken Long enjoyed planes... Amy Lorentz loved horses... etc. In some cases the recipient knew what that theme was, and sometimes not.

I had no idea that Cody's body of work was so extensive, but during his Memorial Service, the recipients of many of his paintings brought them to a 'showing', and there were more than twenty displayed. I knew of at least a dozen that had not been brought to the showing. That is a very large contribution of beauty. It is amazing to know that at least thirty families will continue to share Cody's love and generosity for many years. Thank you, Cody.

I would like to add under each painting the following information:

< Painting Title >    < Person For Whom It Was Painted >   < size >    < Date Painting Was Presented >

< Theme Of Painting or Reason For The Gift... If Known >  < Present Location >

If anyone can tell me the information which might be missing, please contact me so that it might be added to this record. Please send information to: ken.smith1@comcast.net

Notes:

* Painted on Masonite

#1  Carpenter's Falls - View From The North was painted as a 'Thank You' gift to Harold Shifflet, Cody's brother's Father-In-Law who spent a week at the Gridley ranch helping to re-model the attic for Cody to use as a residence. Cody was coming to live there and be a live-in, full-time support person for mom and dad. Harold heard about Ken being there for that job and he said he was going to help. He was a lot of help.

Not Shown: Carpenter's Falls - View From The South was painted as a Thank You gift to Jack Alberti, a close family friend from Fremont that also came up with Ken to work on the re-model. These paintings were Cody's way of repaying for the generosity of friends who came when there was a need. Carpenter's Falls exist only in the mind of the artist and the eye of the viewer. The name of the falls is associated to the work these men did.

#2  For a Christmas gift, Cody painted a separate picture for each of his five children. The day they were opened they were placed along a wall for safe keeping, and soon someone noticed that two of them seemed to be similar enough that they could almost go together. At that time they started putting the puzzle together and found that they did indeed fit together to make a single composite panorama image, in the images' owners' birth order. When it was known that many were bringing their paintings to Cody's service, his son Andy acquired materials and made nearly forty easels upon which the paintings could be displayed. He also made a frame that you see surrounding the five paintings in picture #22. I am informed that they are still together in that frame and residing at the Gridley Ranch. After the display, Andy donated all of the easels to the church that kindly offered their facilities for the service. Very nice, Andy.

#3 Painted for Chris Smith's wife Trisha (who was not impressed with the "rotting stump") and it was renamed by Chris after their divorce to "The Beam In Her Eye."

#4 Larry says: "This stream reminded Cody of all the stories Jim and I had told about the fun times on the creek behind Grandma and Grandpa's Stahl's house. The waterwheel addition was for Gena. She was painting a picture of a waterwheel once when Cody visited us, so Cody wanted to paint one for her. The painting is special to us because he made it personal for both of us. He was an extremely gifted artist."

#5 This bridge is on the Honey Run Grade going from Chico to Paradise, CA. Cody knew that Natalie shared his love for covered bridges, and he asked her what her favorite season was, and painted it in Fall foliage.
